Chronicle of a Rebellion; Mario Viveros (2008)
Zapatistas: Chronicle of a Rebellion
has a history of its own: This documentary's first version, entitled
La Guerra de Chiapas
and released in late January 1994, was one of the first journalistic efforts to present and analyse the Zapatista uprising. Ten years later, in 2004, a second version was released. Presented as a Chronicle, it documented the most important moments of the public history of the EZLN since the Zapatista uprising on 1st January 1994, as well as the reaction of the Mexican government, and Mexican and international civil society. This new version was called
Zapatistas: Chronicle of a Rebellion
. In January 2008
canalseísdejulio
released an updated edition, which chronicles the development of the Zapatista movement from 1994 until 2007. The updated edition includes material on the paramilitary group responsible for the massacre of Acteal in 1997 and images of the Zapatistas' most recent campaign,
la otra campaña
. It also investigates the role of the Zapatistas in the events surrounding the elections of 2006 and their involvement in the (brutally repressed) social movements in Atenco and Oaxaca. Furthermore, the updated version documents and denounces the Mexican government's strategy of militarization, accelerated under the current presidency of Felipe Calderón.
