'Other Campaign' update: 18th - 24th March 2007
Main news this week is the new communique from the EZLN that has just been released and translated. The communique deals with the second stage of the Other Campaign, due to start on March 25th, with a delegation of 7 comandantas, 7 comandentes and one subcomandante spreading out across Mexico to link up with La Otra adherents throughout Mexico. The document also stresses continuing support for Atenco and Oaxaca.
CIEPAC have released the following statement on the recent harassment faced by themselves and other Other Campaign adherents, including a denunciation of the current justice system in Mexico.
Brad Will’s family have recently been in Mexico, visiting the site of their son’s death, and seeking a legitimate investigation into Brad’s death in Oaxaca.
News from Canada, where the Secwepemc people are protesting against the 2010 Winter Olympics which result in the destruction on some of their homelands (and stating that they “Unite our voice and all our actions with the Zapatista Army of National Liberation”). More news also from the Cucapa Indigenous Community of El Mayor’s camp which was mentioned in previous news reports on this site. Mexican immigrants in Harlem are also organising against ongoing gentrification as part of La Otra.
Meanwhile, the Oaxaca Study Action Group website may be a useful source of information for those interested in what has been happening in Oaxaca in the past few months, while others may be interested in Stephen Lendman’s review of John Ross’ recent book on the Zapatistas.
